The first day of school is a big milestone for every child – and for every parent. A little preparation at home can turn nervous butterflies into excitement. Here are five simple ways to help your child start school with confidence.
1. Talk about school in a positive way
Children pick up on our feelings. Share happy stories about your own school days and talk about the fun things your child will do – making friends, painting, playing and learning new things.
2. Set a sleep and morning routine early
Start the school-day routine one or two weeks before classes begin. A fixed bedtime, an unhurried breakfast and a calm morning help children feel settled and ready to learn.
3. Visit the school together
If possible, walk around the campus with your child before the first day. Seeing the classrooms, playground and entrance makes the new place feel familiar instead of strange.
4. Practise small independent tasks
Let your child practise opening a lunch box, packing a school bag, putting on shoes and asking for help politely. These little skills build a big sense of confidence.
5. Keep goodbyes short and cheerful
A warm hug, a smile and a clear “I’ll see you after school” works better than a long goodbye. Be on time at pick-up so your child learns they can trust the routine.
Every child settles in at their own pace. With patience, encouragement and a steady routine, the first few weeks of school become the beginning of a joyful learning journey. For admission enquiries or a campus visit, get in touch with Brigade Public School.
